  1. lorna says:

Are all these people mentioned related.

    • hallnjean says:

Yes, they are related, either by birth or by marriage. Catherine Sinclair and her spouse Joseph Cook, who is listed immediately under her, make up the first generation (which is why she has a number ‘1.’ before her name — and the ‘sp’ in front of Joseph’s name stands for spouse).

Their children have a number ‘2.’ in front of their names (and ‘sp’ in front of their spouses’ names), and the children of each of Catherine’s kids are listed below their parents and have a number ‘3.’ in front of their names, and so on and so on …

So there are 4 generations of people from the same original family listed here.

  2. Susan Mollica says:

I descend from Catherine Sinclair. It’s strange to see them all up here.

There is a few missing though.

Henrietta Settee married John McRae. They had a daughter named Catherine Lavinia.
Catherine Lavinia McRae married George Carter and they had my grandmother:
    Seyda Henrietta Carter.
Seyda (Sarah) married my grandfather Gordon Wells and had my mother:
    June Mable Wells:
June Wells married Hugh Harrison and had:
    Me. ;]

Just for the record! in case someone wants to know.

  3. Susan Mollica says:

Oops…I didn’t realize that “the living” are not to be posted.
Every one I listed before June Wells are not alive. My posts will be taken down, but I am still curious as to the HBC’s archives listing that Catherine Sinclair died in Orkney. I wonder if she died at the old Orkney farm which her father William willed to his brother Thomas to look after his sisters in. (Which would have been Catherine’s aunts and uncle)

    • hallnjean says:

Hi Susan — good to hear from you! I hope it’s okay that I’ve updated the list to include some those not living that you mentioned. If it’s not okay, please let me know and I’ll delete them.

I wasn’t aware that Catherine was said to have died in Orkney — what record has that info? If she was in Orkney it is possible she arrived to visit with her sister Jane (married Kirkness) who lived there with her children even after her husband died, and perhaps Catherine went to visit their brother Colin Sinclair as well who stayed with Jane off and on throughout his life.

Hi Ann — Norma here, sorry to report that what I’ve posted is all that I’ve got on Alexander Wilkinson, and that the info was obtained from a genealogy compiled by Garry Hnatowich c. 1996. I don’t know whether he’s got more specifics on Alex. or not, or how you would reach him, but perhaps somebody will come across your query and respond with better news.

Thank you for such a comprehensive genealogy. I am related to the Cook/Brindle side. Could you change my Mother’s name to “Mary James Brindle” as that is her correct name. My Father James Hallam Ward was born in 1890 not 1900. There are so many details – hard to get them all right! I do appreciate all this information. Mary

  12. Jemima Sinclair says:

My g/grandmother was Jemima Sinclair, related to Rev Sutherland Sinclair. You mention a Colin Sinclair in one of your posts. I have a letter from Harry Sinclair Drever to Colin Sinclair confirming their being related and family. Is it possible the Colin mentioned is the same person? I would appreciate any information you may have that will assist me with my family tree research.
    Regards
    Craig Anthony Sinclair Drever

    • hallnjean says:

      Hi Craig,

I’m not currently aware of a connection between Rev. Sutherland Sinclair and the Red River Sinclairs, but there may have been one. For example, nothing is known for certain about the background of William Sinclair Sr (Captain Colin Sinclair’s father). Out of his earnings as a Hudson’s Bay Company employee he bought a farm in the Orkneys for his brother Thomas and sisters Mary and Ann. Whether that generation of Sinclair siblings grew up in the Orkneys or migrated there from elsewhere is not clear. And there were so many Sinclairs (and Sutherlands and Drevers — and Colins and Jemimas), which means there are many hours of sorting to do. If I come across anything I’ll let you know.

      Happy connection hunting,
      Norma

      • Susan Molica says:

Oh hi again, I have William Sinclairs (the elder) GedCom family tree. it goes back to 1540 with the birth of Thomas Sinclair and shows more recently the branches of his family going forward once he hit Canada.
Every thing that I have read on William though, states that he was born on the farm in Estaquoy and that he inherited it. Hmm.
If anyone wants the tree, I can send it, but in order for it to show the who, when and where, you will need to download (or I can send) the free GedCom software. It’s really easy to use. Let me know if I can be of any help.
        Regards,
        Susan.
Ps. I also have the correct info on Nahovway and a photograph of her making a strange mystical looking sign with her hands, in the shape of a diamond. I would REALLY like to find out what it means.

      • hallnjean says:

        Hi Susan,

        Thanks for posting.

I do use the GEDCOM genealogies, along with other genealogies, to map out a preliminary family tree, but, as a historian, ultimately I am looking to verify links between people with documentary evidence. In other words, the GEDCOM model compiles data that reflects a believed reality (what people say happened), while I’m working with the evidence-based model (what musty old original records indicate happened). Neither model is fail-safe. There is always some guessing involved. To date I haven’t found any documents that clearly prove a familial connection between William Sinclair Sr. and the Sinclair family that owned the farm before he did (a will listing him as a son and inheritor would be nice. oh well).

The photo of Nahoway sounds endlessly intriguing — where/when was it taken?

  15. Hi Everyone! My name is Corey Cook.

I am from Bloodvein First Nation Manitoba. And as I understand it my great grandfather was Alfred James Cook (Born 1898) and he was from St. Peters MB and left after the land was “surrendered”. Looking at the history I believe to be a descendant of William Hemmings Cook, who would/should be my Great Great Great Great Great (or 4th) Grandfather. Still researching all of this, it’s very interesting and I’ve always had this obsession with finding out my family’s history.

    • hallnjean says:

Hi Corey, good to hear from you,

I like the description in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography that says of William Hemmings Cook that:
“It was his children and their progeny who constituted his most notable contribution to western Canada. His descendants included not only countless Cooks but also Garriochs, Budds, Settees, Calders, Wrens, and Erasmuses. Recording Cook’s death, Peter Garrioch, a grandson and a trader and freighter at Red River, called him ‘the Father of us all.'”

Please keep us all updated on any info. you find on Alfred James Cook.

Further information given to me, ‘Gus’ mother came from Bandon, Ireland – her name was Elizabeth Reilly, married Henry McKenney.

I’m having a very hard time finding information about my great grandmother Vitaline Laroque. She was born in 1899 at Atlee, Alberta and passed away in Calgary, Alberta in 1947. She was also married to Samual Richard McKay. Before my grandmother passed she had told me that Vitaline was born in a teepee and that she was Cree Indian. I’m just confused with the record of her parents being Richard “Dick” Laroque (father) and Elizabeth Lafromboise or Elise Lafontaine?? Can someone please help??? Thank you.

Hi, I’d like to say great work on this site! 🙂 I was hoping you can help me out with the children that Thomas McKay Clarke and Aurora McKenzie had? Thomas was born from Lawrence Clarke and Catherine McKay. My mother told me that the family name came from them. When I do a search on their names, this website pops up. So, I’m trying to do a family tree for me and my family, and my children. 🙂 If you can help out, thank you. Joan.

Hi – I am looking for any information regarding Denise Settee, born 1944 in The Pas. It is believed that her Mother’s name was Blanche. She has 2 daughters (that I know about) born in 1963 and 1965. It is believed she spent some time in Flin Flon. She has a brother who worked in forestry

  22. Mary Monckton says:

Hello – re. Donald McKenzie. My source says he married Matilda Bruce. They had a daughter, Matilda McKenzie, my great grandmother. In Many Tender Ties p.283 note 91 Sylvia van Kirk says “This Donald McKenzie had been a lesser officer in the company’s service and was married to a mixed-blood woman, Matilda Bruce. No one has ever mentioned Adelgonde. Any ideas?

  23. Mary Monckton says:

Thank you for the links re. Donald McKenzie which confirm what I thought – that it is incorrect to have Adelgonde listed as the lesser clerk D McK. ‘s wife here on the genealogy. Matilda Bruce is the mother of my great great grandmother, Matilda Cook m. to Matthew Cook. Can you adjust please? Thanks for all your links/research and wonderful that Canadians have so many records online so we who are far away can still research.
