In 1884, Mr Smith, Deputy Minister of the Department of Marine and Fisheries read from his notes compiled from Hudson’s Bay Company ships’ logs dating from 1870 to 1883 to inform the Select Committee of the House, inquiring into the navigation of Hudson Bay and Strait, as to sailing conditions.
