536 – Robert Taylor.
- HBCA “Davison, John (Captain),” Biographical Sheet, indicates the vessels was under the command of an experienced HBC maritime servant, who had served on previous transatlantic crossings, often as Chief Mate, once (the previous year aboard the Edward and Anne) as Supercargo. and once as Master of the schooner Mainwaring when it was sailed to the Bay in 1807 to remain as coastal transport.
- Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, Green Book (Underwriters), 1812, describes the vessel as ship-rigged with 2 decks, at 315 tons burthen it had a draught of 14 feet when fully loaded; it was originally built or owned by interests in Konin (a city in the interior of Poland that became part of the French Empire in 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars), with a construction date of 1803; the vessel’s current owner while it was surveyed in the Port of Cowes is listed as Chapman (suggesting the latter took it as a prize at sea), who was using it as a ‘transportation’ vessel, under Captain W. Jackson.
- Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, Red Book (Shipowners), 1812, describes the vessel as ship-rigged, single decked, but with beams (presumably for laying in an additional deck), the hull sheathed with copper fastened with iron bolts (as of 1806 — which might well be the year it was captured), and of 330 tons burthen with a draught of 16 feet when fully loaded; in addition it was outfitted with eight 18-pound cannonade; when the vessel was surveyed at the Port of London, the owner, Chapman, was using the vessel for transport under Captain J. Jackson. [See transcript, http://users.xplornet.com/~shipping/ShipsPQR1b.htm.]
- Lloyd’s Register of Shipping (1813) [see also http://www.lr.org/about_us/shipping_information/Lloyds_Register_of_Ships_online.aspx], lists the vessel as a 10 year old, Second Class ship of First Quality materials, with a sheathed double hull and 4 guns, ship-rigged, under Captain W. Jackson, operating as an American-owned constant trader. It appears, therefore that the HBC voyage under Davison was an extra/supplementary venture undertaken between usual/normal transport duties.
