Hello, I am a decendant of Jean Baptiste Riel and have attempted to substantiate this claim:
1. RIEL dit L’IRLANDE, Jean Baptiste ‘Sanscouci’/a.k.a. Jack REILLY. Born c. 1645, Limerick, Ireland; one of the Irish ‘Wild Geese‘, assimilated into the army of Louis XIV; voyaged to Canada and soldiered in the Compannie de La Valtrie (Berthier Company of the Carignan-Salieres Regiment); died Lavaltrie, Quebec
I have found no evidence in my meager online research that they are indeed one and the same person, that a Jack Rielly even existed, birth records do not exist, and he is not listed as a known soldier in the Carignan-Salieres Regiment, or that he married Louise Lafontaine in Ireland.
Can you tell me if you have documented proof of any of these claims or is it just a good story that everyone has accepted and passed around the internet. Thanks

Good to hear from you Lisa. I must admit my research on this was obviously more meager than your own — I liked the story very much, so included it without having got around to looking for verification. I will let your note stand as a warning that this myth may have no substance, although I’m hoping that when I do get around to looking into it all, something will point to some connection.
[Part of the story seems to have been accepted by the Canadian Irish Studies Foundation, http://cisf.concordia.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=32&Itemid=52, so they might be a source of more precise information.
Check as well: Albert Raimundo Braz, The false traitor: Louis Riel in Canadian culture p. 205 n.1,
http://books.google.ca/books?id=U4zPHsV3XJUC&lpg=PA205&dq=RIEL%20dit%20L%E2%80%99IRLANDE&pg=PA205#v=onepage&q=RIEL%20dit%20L%E2%80%99IRLANDE&f=false for an indication of the family's version of the story.
There is also a genealogy in Cyprien Tanguay, Dictionnaire généalogique des familles canadiennes p. 567 (which I have not sorted through yet), http://books.google.ca/books?id=_bQNAAAAQAAJ&dq=RIEL%20dit%20L%E2%80%99IRLANDE&pg=PA567#v=onepage&q=RIEL%20dit%20L%E2%80%99IRLANDE&f=false]
